Route guide
Three IJ lines from Centraal Station serve different parts of Noord. Distelweg and Zamenhofstraat sit outside those three main routes and have their own connections.
Choose F2 for the eastern side of central Noord, close to IJplein and the newer quays.
F3 is the short, frequent crossing to Buiksloterweg — handy for EYE, A’DAM Tower and Overhoeks. This line often runs through the night.
F4 takes you to the NDSM wharf for studios, festivals and the west side of Noord.
Distelweg links western Noord with Pontsteiger (F6). Zamenhofstraat sits further east and shares routes with Azartplein and Zeeburgereiland. In the Pont app, save the route you use most so the next departure is easy to check.
History
Crossings over the IJ between the city and Waterland or Noord go back centuries. The Buiksloterveer is documented early and ranks among the Netherlands’ oldest public-transport links: a ferry that connected Amsterdam and the north bank long before metro and tunnels.
Since the late nineteenth century, modern IJ ferries have left from behind Centraal Station on De Ruijterkade. The quay behind Cuypers’ station became the fixed departure point for the crossing to Noord.
Municipal IJ ferries have been free for pedestrians since 1912. Today GVB runs frequent services for people on foot and by bike — not only for tourists, but as a daily city link for commuting, culture and neighbourhoods such as NDSM.
