Networks

IJ versus North Sea Canal

IJ ferries

Seven lines (F1–F4, F6, F7, F9). Pedestrians and cyclists travel free. F9 is foot and bike only.

North Sea Canal

Three lines (F20–F22), often 24 hours. Foot/bike free; cars and freight pay. About 600 cars per day on average (2024 sample).

Fleet

Vessels and capacity

The fleet has 19 ferries. IJveer 60 carries up to 310 passengers with bikes or 400 without. The North Sea Canal already runs electric; the goal is zero-emission on the two busiest IJ routes by 2030.

Crowding

Busiest connection: F3

According to the City of Amsterdam, the Buiksloterweg ferry is the busiest IJ link. Where possible, spread demand to F2 IJplein. At night F3 runs continuously; F4 offers partial night service to NDSM.
