History of the Zeeburgereiland ferry

Zeeburgereiland is an engineered island at the meeting of the IJ and the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal. It was created in stages between 1866 and 1894, when dykes, the Oranjesluizen and a dredging depot reshaped water into land.

Its early twentieth-century roles were military: an army rifle range from 1907 and a seaplane base from 1916. Later, a sewage-treatment plant operated here from 1982 to 2006, leaving three tall silos as a landmark. The ferry now adds a short crossing to Sporenburg as the island develops into a new city district.
