History of the Sporenburg ferry

Sporenburg stands in Amsterdam’s Eastern Docklands, on ground repeatedly reshaped by water and infrastructure. Around 1700, this part of the IJ was enclosed and known as ’t Zieke Water, a marshy area connected with the city’s Pesthuis and leased to fishers.

In the nineteenth century the docklands were developed, and the basin between Sporenburg and Borneo later served as a Dutch Railways shunting yard for the former harbours. The dock area became a residential district in the 1990s. The ferry now adds a walking and cycling connection to Zeeburgereiland to this long-changing waterfront.
