Travel guide
This is a vehicle ferry across the North Sea Canal. Motor traffic pays; pedestrians, cyclists and other slow traffic travel free.
The Amsterdam landing is in Westpoort rather than the city centre.
Zaandam is the north-side landing of the Hempont crossing.
Free parking at Hembrug / Hemkade (Zaanstad).
The Hempont north bank sits outside Zaanstad’s paid centrum zones. Use Hembrugterrein visitor lots; there is no garage at the ferry itself.
Do not confuse this with paid parking in Zaandam centre or with Amsterdam’s Hempontplein south bank.

The Zaandam end of the Hempont is beside the historic Hembrug area, where rail, canal and national defence once met. After the North Sea Canal was built in 1865–1876, the Hempont created a direct water link to Amsterdam’s west side, while the first Hembrug railway bridge opened nearby in 1875.
From 1895 to 2003, the neighbouring Hembrug site housed the national weapons and ammunition factory. The ferry still gives this transport and industrial landscape a direct connection to Hempontplein on the Amsterdam side.
