Travel guide
This is a North Sea Canal ferry rather than an Amsterdam IJ ferry. Pedestrians, cyclists and other slow traffic travel free; motor traffic pays on board.
The service runs continuously, while the timetable shows the exact departures for each day.
The Assendelft landing is on the north side of the canal. Follow signs for the Buitenhuizen ferry when approaching by road or bicycle.
Free street parking at Pontplein (Zaanstad).
Assendelft sits outside Zaanstad’s paid parking zones in Zaandam. There is no municipal garage or P+R at the landing; use the surface lot and check roadside signs for any local restrictions.
F21 also carries cars for a single fare, so you can drive aboard instead of leaving the car.

The Assendelft landing is beside Buitenhuizen, a former IJ-side hamlet in a landscape transformed by the North Sea Canal. Construction of the canal divided the Buitenhuizen polder in 1874, separating land that had long belonged together.
The local water crossing endured the change: an older ferry over the IJ continued across the new canal. The Buitenhuizerpont now links Assendelft and the Zaanstreek with Spaarndam on the south bank, continuing a practical connection through a landscape reshaped by water engineering.
