Travel guide

About the Spaarndam ferry

The ferry carries cars and other motor vehicles. Motor traffic pays, while pedestrians, cyclists and other slow traffic cross free.

It provides a direct canal crossing between the Haarlem/Spaarndam side and the Zaanstreek.

Finding the landing

Spaarndam is the south-side landing of the F21 crossing.

Parking near Spaarndam

Free parking at the F21 south-bank landing.

The canal landing is in Haarlemmermeer (Houtrakpolder), not in Haarlem’s paid zones. There are no municipal garages; use the open lots by the N202 approach and check signs.

You can also drive onto F21 for a single fare instead of leaving the car.

Rates are indicative and can change by street or day. Always check the meter or local signs. Official parking information

History of the Spaarndam ferry

The Spaarndam ferry landing is near a village shaped by Dutch water management for centuries. In the thirteenth century, the Spaarndammerdijk and its locks controlled drainage while keeping navigation possible. That lock landscape still defines the historic centre.

Even after major nineteenth-century works such as the North Sea Canal changed the surroundings, Spaarndam retained its character and gained protected village status in 1971. The ferry adds a direct modern crossing to Assendelft.
